Parkside FAQ

Question (Q):  Can I ride the bus home with a friend and get off at their stop if I bring a note from home granting me permission?
Answer (A):  NO, students are only permitted to ride their designated bus and must use only their assigned stop.

Policy: Bus Transportation (Handbook page 13) – Only students who qualify for transportation (see pg 4) are eligible to ride the bus.  Students must comply with all school rules and regulations and must get on or off ONLY at their designated stops.  STUDENTS ARE NOT PERMITTED TO GET OFF AT A FRIEND’S STOP EVEN WITH THE NOTE.  

 

Q:  Can I use my cell phone before school, at lunch or during an extra-curricular event to send a text, take a picture or just listen to music?
A:  NO, cells phones are not allowed during these times

Policy:  Cell Phones (page 16) are not allowed in class and should NOT be used before school or during the school day (including lunch) for any reason.  Phones discovered during these times are subject to confiscation until picked up by a parent or guardian. Cell phones brought to school must be turned off and stored in a locker.  Students caught using cell phones (checking texts, accessing the internet, calling, texting, taking photos, etc.) are subject to disciplinary action, including Saturday detention or DSP.
 


Q:  Can I chew gum in class?
A: Chewing Gum is generally permitted at Parkside School, except in designated areas such as PE, Music and Band, or when used in a disruptive or inappropriate manner.
 


Q:  Is it okay to drop off my child in the front of the building for band, chorus, Yearbook or other morning practices or meetings?
A:  NO, students should always be dropped off on the West side in the morning, regardless of the time.

Policy:  Drop Off and Pickup Procedures - For safety reasons, all students transported to school should be dropped off on the WEST side of building in the morning regardless of the time. Cars should enter from Shooting Park Road only.  After school pickup is also on the WEST side before 4:00pm.  Parents may pickup out front after Project Success.
 


Q:  Do I have to go to Project Success if I don’t have any homework?
A:  Yes, daily attendance at Project Success is required unless a parent/guardian excuses a child from attending in advance.

Policy: Project Success is an after school program to assist students in completing homework, organizing materials and studying for tests.   Project Success meets Monday-Thursday until 4:10pm. Daily attendance is mandatory for those who enroll and those at risk of retention after the first semester, unless a written exemption is provided by a parent or guardian.  Bus transportation is provided.
 

Q:  Can I purchase ala carte items if I do not have a lunch card or do not have money on my account?
A:   NO, you will be given a lunch, but it may be different from the regular lunch.

 

Q:  Is there a charge to get another lunch card or lanyard?
A: Yes, students are charged for replacement cards and lanyards (see policy below)

Lunch Policy: Each student is given a debit card for lunch purchases.  The card is placed on a lanyard which should always remain at school.  Additional cards may be purchased for $1 (first card), $3 (second card), $5 (all subsequent cards).  Lanyards are available for $1 or for 5 Raider Tickets in the Raider Store. Students without a lunch card or who have a negative balance will not be allowed to purchase items from the ala carte food line.
Regular Hot Lunch - students may purchase a school lunch at a cost of $2.35 $.40 reduced price, or free to qualifying students. Menus are posted outside of the office, in homerooms and on the website.  
Alternative Lunch - in addition to the regular menu entrée, an alternative choice is available each day for all students.  Monday – chicken nuggets, Tuesday – Bosco Sticks, Wednesday – Corn Dog, Thursday - Pizza, Friday – Beef Bites.
Ala Carte items such as a variety of cold sandwiches, hot subs, salads, wraps, yogurt, granola and other healthy snacks are available for purchase.  These items are not part of the free or reduced lunch program, and are not available to students without sufficient funds on their account.



Q:  Is it considered an unexcused tardy if my parent provides an excuse for oversleeping, car trouble, etc.
A:  YES, however consequences for morning tardiness will not be assigned until a student is tardy 3 or more times.

Tardy Policy - Students who are tardy to morning homeroom three or more times per month will be assigned consequences at the end of each month.  Discipline will be progressive in nature.  Consequences will be assigned by administration and may include Office Detention, Saturday Detention and Disciplinary Study Program.
