Baggy Books

Baggy Books

Book 2

Your child should be bringing home their book pouch with a book or two in it at least once a week to read overnight.  This is a book(s) that is at their reading level; you can find the level on the back cover.  We have practiced this book in the classroom and now they can continue to practice at home.  No matter what day your child brings their book pouch home, please return the book and book pouch the following day.  If you do not return the book and book pouch the next day your child will not receive another book until it is returned.  Thank you for your cooperation and support at home!

Tips for Reading with your Child at Home

  • Make sure your child is reading every word on the page to ensure the full meaning.
  • Make sure your child is reading left to right and top to bottom.
  • Remind your child to look at the picture if they need help or clues with the words.
  • Find sight words or familiar words on each page.
  • If a word is unfamiliar to your child ask them the beginning sound, middle, sound and ending sound to help them figure it out (i.e. Ask them to chop it up!)
  • Have your child read aloud to you every night.
  • Ask your child to tell you in his/her own words what happened in the story.
  • Before getting to the end of the story, ask your child questions about the characters and events in the story; this will help check your child's understanding of what he/she is reading.
  • Choose a quiet place, free from distractions, at which your child may do his/her nightly reading.
  • As your child reads, point out spelling and sound patterns such as cat, hat, pat.
  • Make reading fun, a time that you both look forward to spending together!
