ACCELERATED READER
Mrs. Ochs: 8th grade
Each nine weeks, you will be expected to read 25 points from the Accelerated Reader List. For most students, the book must have a reading level of 5th grade or higher. However, if a book that you want to read is above or below your required level, you must show it to me for approval. **All books must have teacher approval first or points earned will not be accepted! You are responsible for checking your own reading record and making sure that you have not already tested on the book chosen.
Time, equivalent to one full class period, will be given per week to read silently for AR. You will be expected to continue with outside reading on your own. After reading a book, you will take an AR test in my classroom. You absolutely may not take tests anywhere else. After completing a test, you must record your points on the “Point Record Slip” and have me view your screen as well as sign your point slip. These slips will be turned into me, so I can record your points. Do not take AR tests when substitues are here. Any tests taken without my knowledge will not be accepted toward your final point accumulation at the end of the quarter. Remember, you only get one chance to take the test. (Please do not rely on the movie to take the test. Tests are specifically written/ rewritten to assess your knowledge of events that are only in the book.) You may earn 1 point of credit per quarter for a test score of 50%.
The due date for AR points is generally set a few days before the end of each quarter. If you have any additional points over the required amount, you may use them as extra credit toward the current quarter’s grade. If you have 7 points or less at Midterm of each quarter, I will require you to come in each morning at 8:00 AM to read until you earn them.
The Accelerated Reading grade counts as 15% of your final Literature grade each nine weeks. We will read some novels together in class throughout the year, and you will be able to take an AR test over each when we finish. The remaining points will depend on what reading you do outside of class.
