Historical Facts about Volleyball -Volleyball was developed in 1895 by William G. Morgan at the YMCA in Holyoke, Massachusetts. -It was created for businessmen who required a game that involved less physical contact than basketball. -Volleyball blended elements of baseball, basketball, handball, and tennis. -Volleyball was originally played using a tennis net hung 6 ft. 6 in. above the floor. -The first game of volleyball was played on July 7th, 1896 at Springfield College. -Official Volleyball was designed in 1900. The Game -A game shall consist of 25 points and winning by a two(2) point advantage. -A match is two out of three games. Team -An official team consists of six (6) players. -Left Front -Center Front -Right Front -Left Back -Center Back -Right Back Scoring---Rally Scoring -Rally scoring means that either team can score a point, you do not have to be the serving team to score a point. Serving -The ball may touch the net and go over on a serve. This is called a let serve. -The server must have both feet out of bounds when serving. -The ball must go over the net. -The serve must be inbounds on the opponents court. -The serve may not be helped or assisted over the net at any time in any way. Playing the Ball -The ball may not be held, caught, lifted, or pushed over the net. -A ball landing on the line is considered "in" or "good". -A ball may not be played by a player twice in succession(two times in a row), except on a block. -The ball may be contacted three times on one side. -If the ball hits the ceiling on your side and comes down on you opponents' side, it is a side out. Players -All players (except the server) must be inbounds and in position while the ball is being served. -A player may not step over the center line while the ball is in play. -A player may not touch the net while the ball is in play. -A player may play the ball after a teammate has hit the ball into the net. -A player may play the ball after it hits the top of the net and comes to the proper side. -Two players from the same team may hit the ball at the same time, and it is considered one hit and either player may play it again. -A player may hit the ball only after some part of the ball has crossed the net. -A player may leave the court to play the ball. -A player must attempt to play the ball after a teammate hits it out of bounds. -Players must keep the same serving order and rotate in a clockwise order. -You can NOT Block a Serve. Dead Ball -The ball is dead after a point or side out. -The ball is dead when it hits the floor or any object out of bounds. |
