Flag Football Study Guide

History:  Flag Football is believed to have begun in the military during World War II to prevent injury to the soldiers that wanted to play football.

Flag Guarding:  Occurs when a player uses his/her hands to prevent the flag from being pulled by an opposing player.  Flag guarding is illegal in flag football.

Fumbles:  There are no fumbles in flag football.  If a player drops the ball, the ball is considered "dead" and the new line of scrimmage will be where the ball is on the ground.

Positions:  Quarterback- throws the ball,  Running Back-  Takes hand-offs from quarterback and runs the ball, Wide Receiver-  runs pass routes and catches the ball from the quarterback,  Center-  The middle person in the offensive line that snaps the ball to the quarterback and protects him/her.  Offensive Line-  The other members of the team that protect the quarterback.  Defense- Attempts to stop the offense from moving the ball downfield and scoring points.

Interceptions-  Occurs  when any member of the defense catches the ball thrown from the opposing quarterback.

Kick Off: One team kicks the ball to the receiving team.  If the ball goes out of bound, it is re-kicked.  If the ball touches a player, it is "downed" on that spot.  If the ball is caught, the receiver must run towards the opponents end zone until they cross it, or one flag is removed.

Scrimmage: The general rules of tackle football apply.  No offensive player may leave his feet in blocking, may not trip, shove, clip, or hold an opponent.  The center passes the ball between his legs to a player in the backfield who advances it down the field by running, kicking, or passing forward, backwards, or sideward.

Number of Downs: 4 downs (chances or plays) to make a goal.

Number of Players on a Team:  There must be an equal number on both teams.  Extras will rotate in. Everyone Plays.

Downed Ball: A ball carrier is considered down and the ball dead when a defensive player removes one flag.

Offense:  The team that has possession of the ball and is trying to score.

Defense:  the team that does not have the ball and is trying to pull the flag of the ball carrier or intercept a pass.

Scoring: A touchdown scores 7 points.  A safety scores 2 points.

Safety: When the offense is tackled (flag pulled) while in their end zone.

Fouls and Penalties:  Tackling, pushing, tripping, holding, or roughing another player  --5 yards(5 Steps).  Use of hands or leaving feet in an attempt to block an opponent.  Using a straight arm by the ball carrier or holding his hand over his flag  -5 yards(5 Steps)   Off sides  --5 yards(5 Steps).

Line of Scrimmage: An imaginary line where the ball is placed in order to execute a play.

Off Sides:  When either team crosses the line of scrimmage before the ball is snapped.(5 yard Penalty-  5 steps)

Pass: Throwing the ball to a teammate.  All players on the offense are eligible to receive a pass.  The person throwing the pass MUST be behind the line of scrimmage.

Lateral Pass: An underhand toss to a teammate who is behind you.  This pass DOES NOT have to take place from behind the line of scrimmage.
