Welcome

September 18, 2009

On behalf of the administration, staff, and students I would like to welcome you to Northview School where our students are our first priority and we build educational foundations for life-long success.  Our school serves students in Pre-K through 1st  Grade.  Northview School will have an enrollment of approximately 280 students.  Thirty-five dedicated, caring, and highly qualified faculty and staff members work diligently to educate our students.  There are a variety of special education programs offered to the students as well as physical education, music, and art.

Peru Public Schools is very excited to be able to offer preschool for 3 and 4-year olds in our district.  The Bright Futures Preschool Program will be starting its first year during the 09-10 school year.  This program is a five day-a-week program and runs 2.5 hours per day.  Transportation is available. Students in the Bright Futures Program will be introduced to a wide range of activities that will reinforce and strengthen their social/emotional, physical, cognitive, and language abilities.  Everything in the preschool environment is designed to help the children learn and grow!  Some of the areas of focus in the preschool curriculum include:  literacy/language, dramatic play, science/sensory, art, math, fine and gross motor, music, and computers.

We pride ourselves on providing high quality education emphasizing literacy skills (reading/writing) and mathematics.  Science and Social Studies are integrated into the literacy program along with thematic units.  Our literacy curriculum covers five main areas:  phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, comprehension, and reading fluency.  It is intense, varied, and aligned to state and national standards.  Students are educated via a core reading program, individualized reading programs, research based intervention programs, and best practices in reading.  These programs include Rigby's Literacy By Design, Accelerated Reader (AR), Jolly Phonics, Michael Heggerty’s Phonemic Awareness Program, Wilson Reading, Guided Reading/Differentiated Instruction, and Reading Recovery.  The glue holding our entire reading program together is our highly educated core of teachers who consistently attend professional development in reading and model best practices in reading on a daily basis.  Many of our teachers have a Master’s Degree in Reading or are currently working on this specialized degree!

In addition to our reading program, we believe in a rigorous mathematics program.  Kindergarten and first grade classrooms are using the McGraw Hill Series, which provides a quality mix of number sense, algebra, geometry, measurement, probability, and problem solving.  According to the challenging Illinois Standardized Achievement Test (ISAT), 89% of our district’s third grade students meet or exceed mathematics standards on the ISAT!

Each kindergarten and first grade classroom at Northview has at least four computers and there is a computer lab with 25 computers.  All of the computers are networked and have access to the internet.  The computers are used on a daily basis to promote reading, writing, math, and research along with keyboarding skills.  Technology is a key component of the instructional program at Northview.

The fine arts curriculum offers an array of student opportunities in all grades.  Students are provided music, art and physical education classes designed to help them receive a well-rounded educational curriculum.

We value relationships.  Our teachers emphasize relationships and people skills via character education and appropriate interpersonal behavior through the PeaceBuilder Program.  PeaceBuilders praise people, give up put-downs, seek wise people, notice hurts, and right wrongs.

Our philosophy at Northview School is that students learn best when they are actively engaged in learning.  Active engagement includes learning beyond the classroom walls.  Students at Northview are given the widest range of learning experiences that we can possibly provide.

We would like to thank our PTC (Parent-Teacher Club) and all our parents who work hand in hand with our school to benefit our students.

Remember that we hold absolutely no limits to the academic potential of our students – ALL children are capable of remarkable success, no exceptions.  With the continued support of our staff, parents, and students, we will make this goal a reality.

We look forward to working with you as we take the next steps in the educational journey of your children.  We are proud of our school and welcome the opportunity to share more with you.  Please feel free to contact us by calling 815-223-2567.  We would be happy to assist you in any way that we can!
