Rebecca Caudill Young Readers' Book Award
To promote a desire for literacy
By Jane Gnidovec
Welcome to the Rebecca Caudill
“The first essential in any book is that it have something significant to say --a book that leaves the reader with bigger ideas than when he began reading - that stimulates his thinking, stretches his mind, deepens his feelings. A good book sticks to your ribs.” – Rebecca Caudill
Who is Rebecca Caudill? Rebecca Caudill was a writer of children's books. Caudill, who was born in Harlan County, Kentucky on February 02, 1899, often wrote about her childhood in Kentucky. Rebecca Caudill wrote such books as Barrie and Daughter, Tree of Freedom, and School House in the Woods. Caudill died on October 02, 1985. In 1987, the Rebecca Caudill Young Readers' Book Award was established in her honor. What makes this award truly unique is that the winner is chosen by children. Each February, children in grades four through eight vote for their favorite book from a list that has been selected by a nominating committee. The prerequisite for voting is that the student must have read, or have read to him/her, at least three of the titles on the list.
