Students will learn the scientific process skills (observing, classifying, measuring, hypothesizing, predicting, describing, inferring or drawing conclusions from data, asking questions or formulating problems, designing experiments, carrying out experiments, & constructing principles, laws, and theories. These are all things "real" scientist will do. These goals will be accomplished through a variety of units, activities, and experiments throughout the year.
Daily Participation - 10%
Homework & Daily Lab worksheets - 50%
Tests/Projects - 40%

“Energy Jammer Snuff the Flame”
Problem Solving

Timeline: February (1-2 weeks)
Goals:
- Students will design an energy jammer to snuff the flame of a candle staying within certain criteria.
- Their design is limited to the materials offered by the teacher.
- They have to stay within a budget as each material they use has to be purchased and they can only spend $100.00.
- The design is tested and then reworked if necessary

Timeline: February-March
Goals:
-
- Book Unit C – Nature of Matter is used as a resource
- Students investigate “OOBLECK” and end with a “Scientific Conference”
- Objectives for Kitchen Chemistry are:
- to conduct and complete experiments following the steps of the scientific method
- chart observations to allow for quick comparison and easy analysis
- measure liquids accurately using the metric system
- determine substances by analyzing their different chemical and physical characteristics.
