LESSON 1 

 OPAC is our Follett search engine for our media center collection.  If you want something OPAC will let you know if we have it.  OPAC works as any other search engine.  Follow these steps to learn all about OPAC.

  Double click on the Follett OPAC icon in the program launcher.

  Type word or words in the search bar

  Click on the Author, Title, Subject or Key Word buttons to begin search

  You may search for

  •      an author you like:  Paulsen, Gary

  •      a title you heard about:  The Giver

  •      a topic [Subject] you need to research:  INSECTS

  •      a part of a title [Key Word]:  Mary Kate and Ashley

  When the search is complete, you will see a list of resources.

  •      There may be books, videos, and other kinds of materials.

  In the list you will see many kinds of information.

  •       The Author is in the first column

  •       The Title is in the second column

  •       The call number is in the third column.  

  •       Pay special attention to the different types of call numbers.  They are listed for you.

  •       FIC/F means fiction book

  •       E/EASY means fiction [story book] 

  •       A Dewey number [796 or other] means nonfiction

  •       REF means reference book

  •       VID means videotape

  •       The status IN [available on shelf] or OUT [checked out] is in the fourth column

  You may print this list if your teacher gives you permission.

  Once you see the list, press enter or double click on any title to open the record

  An open record looks like a catalog card.

  •       You will see the title, author, series name if any and a summary.

  •       The call number is in the right column of the screen

  •       Subjects are also listed.  You may try other related subjects by clicking on them.

  •       You may see a reading level.

  •       You will also see other "clickable" subject headings.  If you want to see more books on the same related          topic, click on those links.

      Once you have located the materials you need, find them on the shelf and check them out.

How to Use Book Bag 

LESSON 2  

  Book Bag is an important part of Follett OPAC.  With Book Bag you can browse topics of interest and print a list        of books/materials you want to find.  Follow these simple steps to learn about Book Bag.  

  1.  Start OPAC with a double click.

 2.  Enter a topic in the search line.

 3.  Click on the Subject button.

 4.  Use the up and down arrows or move the mouse to highlight the topic you will investigate.

 5.  Press the enter key.  A reminder, each time you press the enter key, you move into greater  detail in the OPAC database.                      

 6.  Press enter again to enter the first record.

 7.  Along the right side you will see a button labeled "Add to Book Bag". 

 8.  After you have looked at all the records, you have several options.  

  • You may print this list.

  • You may save this list for future reference.

 9.  To look at your Book Bag list, click the Bookbag icon on the task bar.  

10.  You will see a list of the titles you have selected.

11.  You can...

  • Click Print Preview to see what you list looks like.

  • Remove one or all titles.

  • Save to a file which you name.

  • Print the list.

  • In the drop down menu on the right side, you can select the order of the list: call number-author, author-title, or title-author.

  • In the check box on the lower left side, you can also select or deselect annotations.

  • Name the list to be saved, if you wish, on the lower left side in the box marked "Book Bag title".
