What is Battle of the Books? Battle of the Books is a reading incentive program designed to encourage students to read quality literature.
How it all began
Grades 3 and 4
Grade 5
How are the books selected? All of the books selected must be available in paperback. Books are carefully selected so that classics, award winners and new favorites are all considered. Books are selected over a range of reading levels so that all students can participate. For example: in the grades 3 and 4 list there is at least one book on the second grade level to appeal to reluctant readers and one on the fifth grade level to challenge those students reading above grade level. Care is taken to ensure that the collection is balanced with respect to male and female protagonists, the genres represented, and the ethnic groups portrayed. We also look for books in series or authors with a large body of work to encourage students to read after the competition. The fifth grade books were recommended and selected by last year’s fifth graders along with the help of Mrs. Spelich, library aide.

Mrs. Mary Lindenmeyer conducted the Geography Bee at Northview for her final time. She initiated the Geography Bee and has been the coordinator for the past 5 years at Northview. Mrs. Lindenmeyer did not plan on coordinating the event this year, however when no one volunteered to take over, she didn’t let the students down, she again coordinated the competition. Special thanks to Mrs. Lindenmeyer for making this happen in 2008! The National Geographic Geography Bee is program for students in grades 4-12, designed to encourage the teaching and study of geography. Fifteen(15) fifth graders vied for the Northview Geography Bee championship. Those students were: Ross B., Austin M., Adam P., Jonah R., Zach B., Brett K., Lauren G., Cam M., Matt S., Amber C., Paige S., Katie B., Teagan P., Elliot Lewis, and Erik M. The winners are: First place-Cameron M., Second Place-Ross B. and Third Place-Brett K.. If you’d like to quiz your skills and knowledge in geography visit http://www.nationalgeographic.com/geographybee/ . | In an era of computer-generated sounds, the Chicago Voice Exchange wows audiences with what five people can do using only their voices. Three time winners of the Midwest Harmony Sweepstakes A Cappella competition, Chicago Voice Exchange has delighted audiences around the country with their tight vocal harmonies and witty original songs. Northview School was fortunate enough to host an assembly featuring the Chicago Voice Exchange on Tuesday, October 16th. From "In the Still of the Night" to such fun songs as "Underdog," Chicago Voice Exchange is ideal family entertainment and a great vehicle to introduce children to the wonders of what the human voice can do. The group's show visits the various eras of a cappella history, all the time entertaining the audience with their great sound and trademark humor. This was possible through a grant from the Illinois Valley Fine Arts Council, The Illinois Arts Council and the Peru Elementary PTC. |

The Peru Elementary PTC provides many wonderful experiences for the students including rock climbing, roller skating, bowling, field trips, and assemblies. The PTC kicked off the 2007-08 school year with a Family Night on September 13 at Northview School. Earlier in the day Tim performed a different show at Roosevelt and Northview. The ProKids Show developed and performed by Tim Hannig focuses on respect and responsibility, caring for others, appreciating teachers and parents, no bullying, and "Don't do what is easy, do what is RIGHT!" Tim entertained the families with music, magic, comedy, drama, and audience participation. Tim has performed at Six Flags Theme Parks, Hollywood's Magic Castle, and at the White House. He has entertained over 1.7 million families across the United States. Thanks to the Peru PTC for providing this opportunity for our families. |

Disabilities Awareness Program
9/24/07
|
Students at Northview School are participating in a Disabilities Awareness Program sponsored by Horizon House along with presentations by the staff at the Illinois Valley Center for Independent Living(IVCIL). One of the purposes of the program is to have students actually meet and get to know people with disabilities and the desired outcome is for students to accept and understand individuals with disabilities. In September students took a pre-survey of attitudes in their classrooms. This was a short 15-question survey on students’ attitudes towards people with disabilities. The opening assembly was held on Monday, September 26th with presenters who had physical, visual and hearing disabilities. Each speaker shared what caused the disability, what limitations it has created, how they have adjusted to living with a disability, how technology has helped them and how they are similar to others without a disability. During the months of October, November, December and January various staff members from IVCIL, Horizon House and high school students present in each homeroom. This provides for smaller groups of students to meet and interact with people with disabilities. Child’s Play, a Chicago theater troupe presents how to write a story in February. Students are then asked to create a story with a character or characters that have a disability and the plot focuses on the abilities of people with disabilities. In April, Child’s Play returns to perform three plays based on the Northview students’ stories. Students whose work is performed will receive special recognition at the assembly. The program concludes with a post-survey, the same 15-questions used in the pre-survey. |
